Lagos: Then & Now

Hello, and welcome to Discover Lagos, the podcast that uncovers the stories, culture, and people behind the heartbeat of Lagos. I’m your host, Jermaine Sanwo-Olu, and today, we’re diving into the incredible transformation of Lagos—from its humble beginnings as a fishing village to the bustling mega city we know today.

Lagos wasn’t always the vibrant metropolis we see now. Originally, it was called 'Eko' by the Awori people, who were the first settlers. The name 'Eko' means ‘war camp,’ a nod to its strategic importance during conflicts. Later, the Portuguese explorers arrived in the 15th century, and they renamed it 'Lagos,' meaning 'lakes.'

By the 19th century, Lagos had become a vital hub in the transatlantic slave trade. Badagry, a town in Lagos State, was one of the most infamous slave ports, where thousands of Africans were shipped to the Americas. After the British outlawed the slave trade, Lagos emerged as a center of commerce, particularly in palm oil and other exports.

In 1861, the British officially annexed Lagos as a colony, marking the start of significant urban development. Roads were laid, schools were built, and the port became a gateway for trade in West Africa. By 1960, Lagos played a starring role in Nigeria’s independence celebrations, serving as the country’s first capital city.

Fast forward to today, and Lagos is a global city—a financial and cultural powerhouse, home to over 20 million people. From its bustling markets to its growing tech ecosystem, Lagos has become a symbol of resilience, innovation, and ambition.

And yet, amidst all this growth, the spirit of its beginnings remains. Lagos is still a place of opportunities, where the small dreams of a fishing village have transformed into the big aspirations of a mega city.

As we continue exploring the history and heart of Lagos, we’ll bring you stories of the landmarks, the people, and the legacy that make Lagos unique.
