Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the wife of Lagos State Governor, has called for enhanced waste management practices in Lagos markets to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for residents. Speaking at the Sabo Ultra-Modern Market in Yaba during a seminar on sanitation and security, she emphasized the importance of maintaining proper hygiene and safety measures in marketplaces.
The seminar, organized by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) in partnership with the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, aimed to raise awareness among market leaders about safety and environmental hazards. Themed “Improving Waste Management and Public Health in Markets: A Recipe for Economic Growth and Prosperity in Lagos Central Senatorial District”, the event addressed how effective waste management contributes to economic and environmental sustainability.
Mrs. Sanwo-Olu highlighted the vital role that markets play in the economy by providing essential goods and services. However, she noted that improper waste disposal in these areas can lead to contamination, pollution, and significant health risks for both consumers and traders. She encouraged strict adherence to waste management guidelines, which can also generate economic benefits through recycling and waste-to-wealth initiatives.
By promoting responsible waste management, Mrs. Sanwo-Olu emphasized, Lagos can move closer to achieving the vision of a 21st-century economy and creating the "Lagos of our dreams."
